Parramatta Lanes 2025
4 days of 5/5.5 hour sound system activations in the heart og multicultural Sydney, its a long haul but worth it to see so many happy faces of all ages
Parramatta Lanes
Sunny Sound System in its current incarnation has done the lanes festival since 2023. Many years ago I did some roving, and for the last three years we have had a roving component to the sound system. The weather this year was good, the sound system sounded the best it ever has with a new sound distribution box enabling me to send the right amount of signal to the various speakers. One highlight of the event were the continued request for the “
“Disco Dancer” – Mithun Chakraborty / Bappi Lahiri (from Disco Dancer, 1982) track which I finally recently got a digital copy of.
Parramatta loves this track and people sing along to all the words.
Heres some footage of one of the times the track got a spin…

The first night DJ Raul Pa-Nui played a 5 hour vinyl set from olf ska to tropical and cumbia. Raul also did roving sets on the Friday and Saturday night.
On the Wednesday and Thursday night DJ Moth Roved in an inflatable Frog costume inspired by the rebel Portand Frog in the US standing up to ICE agents. The Kids went nuts to the Frog, I did some roving in an inflatable Dinosaur costume as well one night. Lots of fun but hot and exhausting dancing in it. After I finished the zip broke so for a minute I was stuck in the dinosaur outfit.

Parramatta Lanes is one of Australia’s best free festival events bringing together so many people and activating so many spaces in the redesigned town centre. 10 litres of bubble Juice, a little of smoke machine juice, 21 hours of music and it was complete. On the third night 10 minutes before the end of a 5.5 hour session the batteries ran out, this has never happened before, the roof of the trailer Dj booth is two household solar panels which charge the array of 100AH lithium batteries but the trailer booth was placed half under an awning so it didn’t quite get enough charge in the day, I took the batteries home and for the final night they were ready for another big session. We got a great response from kids to elderly people who dug the playful vibe at the Sunny Sound System. The whole set up packs down in about an hour and all fits in the trailer ready for the next show. Big shout out to all the organisers, punters who made the space happen. Thanks to DJ Raul Pa Nui, Squizzy and Moth for DJ and roving duties. More Councils should organise this kind of multi cultural music and arts fiesta for their LGA’s, its such a tonic for people in these times of division and fear. Music and art and creativity and blending and sharing of culture is what the world needs at the moment.
All in all it was a great festival, big crowds of happy people diggingall the spaces, the food and thew sounds and the wonderful chaos
